Our next run at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory as part of our "Fundamental Radiation Interactions in Reduced Dimensionalities" research is tentatively schedule for 08 September 2006. We will be investigating the effects of 48-Calcium heavy ions on nanotubes, nanowires and nanocircuits. Always fun!

Profs. Virginia Ayres and Lalita Udpa, along with Alan Rice, Veeco Instruments, have been invited by the National Science Foundation GOALI Program (Grant Opportunity for Academic Liaison with Industry, Program Director Don Senich) to present their experience, "The Strategic Role of the NSF GOALI Program in Scanning Probe Recognition Microscopy Development", at a special panel session during the DMI Grantees Conference to be held 24-26 July 2006 in St Louis, MO. We’re honored to be asked and hope that we can share something useful!

Graduate research assistants Qian Chen/Yuan Fan, and Ben Jacobs/Andrew Baczewski will attend and present "Registration of Tapping and Contact Mode Atomic Force Microscopy Images" and "Electronic Transport Characteristics of Gallium Nitride Nanowire-based Nanocircuits" at the 6th IEEE Conference on Nanotechnology, 17-20 July 2006 in Cincinnati OH.

Congratulations to graduate research assistant Ben Jacobs for receiving the prestigious NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP) Fellowship for a second academic year 06-07. In addition to being just as nationally competitive as in the first year, the NASA GRSP Program Review Board judges you for your first year research output. So way to go, Ben, and great job for MSU and NASA both! (Images: 2005, 2006)

Prof. Virginia Ayres has received a Purdue University Department of Physics Outstanding Alumnus Award and will travel to Purdue for the awards ceremony on 27 October 2006. This really is an honor that I value immensely.

Congratulations to undergraduate research assistant Andrew Baczewski for receiving both a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates Award and an MSU College of Engineering Summer Research Intern Award in 2006 to support his research in Scanning Probe Recognitions Microscopy. Way to go, Andrew!

Congratulations to graduate research assistant Ben Jacobs for passing his Oral Part B Qualifiers with flying colors! Ben presented "Radiation Resiliency in Reduced Dimensionality Systems" before committee members Profs. Tim Hogan, Donnie Reinhard and Virginia Ayres on 31 May 2006. And belated congratulations to Ben for passing his written Qualifiers in January 2006!

Prof. Virginia Ayres has received an outstanding international opportunity from Tokyo Institute of Technology Japan where she will be a Chair of International Cooperation Visiting Professor from 20 September 2005 through 28 February 2006. MSU has granted sabbatical leave 16 August 2005 to 15 August 2006 in full support of Prof. Ayres’ acceptance. Prof. Virginia Ayes will spend the remainder of her sabbatical at the lab of Prof. Jim Gimzewski, UCLA. Jim is one of the true greats in scanning probe microscopy so this is another great opportunity for our group. This will be some year!

Congratulations to graduate research assistant Qian Chen for passing her Oral Part B Qualifiers! Qian presented "Scanning Probe Recognition Microscopy
- The Recognition Strategies" before committee members Profs. Lalita Udpa Subir Biswas, and Virginia Ayres on 10 February 2005. This follows Qian’s outstanding performance on her written Qualifiers.
